NDHCE, NDHCB or FDHRC: which name is current?

Three acronyms show up when you search for Canadian dental hygiene exam preparation, and only two of them are current. Getting this right matters because the wrong name sends you to guidance that stopped being maintained four years ago.

The short answer

NDHCE is the exam: the National Dental Hygiene Certification Examination. The acronym has not changed.

FDHRC is the organisation that administers it today: the Federation of Dental Hygiene Regulators of Canada.

NDHCB is the previous name of that organisation — the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board. It merged into the FDHRC in 2022 and no longer administers the examination.

Why the confusion persists

A great deal of study material was written before 2022, and forum answers are rarely edited after the fact. Automated answers repeat whatever the older sources said, which is why you may see a current question answered with an organisation that stopped running the exam years ago.

If a source describes the certifying body as the NDHCB, that is a reliable signal the material predates the merger. It is not necessarily wrong about the exam — the NDHCE itself did not change its acronym — but it is not a good source for current administrative details such as scheduling, fees or the current blueprint.

What this means for your preparation

For administrative questions — eligibility, booking, the current blueprint, candidate guides — go to the FDHRC. Everything else is practice, and practice material is only as good as its alignment with the blueprint that body publishes.

DHPrep's NDHCE question bank is mapped to the published blueprint, with an explanation for every answer option, so a wrong answer becomes a reason to understand the reasoning. You can start with free NDHCE practice questions before paying anything.

DHPrep is an independent question bank. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the FDHRC, the JCNDE, the ADA, Pearson VUE, or any provincial, territorial or state regulator.

Questions people ask

Is the exam called the NDHCE or the NDHCB?

The exam is the NDHCE — the National Dental Hygiene Certification Examination. The NDHCB was the name of the certifying organisation, not the exam, and it no longer runs the examination.

What is the FDHRC?

The Federation of Dental Hygiene Regulators of Canada. It is the body that now maintains and administers the NDHCE, after the NDHCB merged into it in 2022.

Why do older study guides still say NDHCB?

Material written before 2022, and forum threads that have not been updated, still describe the NDHCB as the certifying body. The organisation changed; the exam acronym did not.

Does the change affect what I study?

No. The exam is the same NDHCE. Use the current blueprint and candidate materials published by the FDHRC, and treat pre-2022 NDHCB material as historical rather than current guidance.
